1. About the Artist

Jean Iwohara is a illustration BFA student at Cal State Long Beach. She primarily works with watercolor and gouache. Her aim is to create a sense of wonder and fantastical narratives. Chanmealea Huy is an artist and illustrator living in Long Beach. She draws with graphite, paint digitally, and acrylic. Art is her main way to communicate with the world. Currently, Chanmealea Huy is learning to model, rig, and animate 3D characters.

2 Formal Analysis

The form of their art was small and large. Their paintings were brightly colored. The texture of the painting look ruff, but that is because of the canvas. Their painting of their work was really smooth and watery. I believe it looks watery because that is a type of style that they work with. The painting was muted pastel color and it was large so we didn’t need to go close to see it. Although when we were close to it, I felt like I needed to stand back so I can really capture what was going on. When I was farther away, I was able to develop my own understanding of what I thought of the painting. There were straight lines, but on all of the turns, you can see the curves, so it makes it look more realistic. The shapes of all of the chains, are basically all the same and the clouds are more of box shape. The clouds are all basically box shape instead of more round because of the digital theme they are having.

3 Content Analysis

This gallery was about the presenting mixed media in the style of pop surrealist, that create tension between the individual and or the technologically advanced environment. They were trying to show that we feel likes holding all of your feelings inside. It shows that you feel trapped and that it is very hard to express yourself when you feel like you are holding everything to yourself. They are trying to explore the tension of an individual when they feel in that state.

4 Synthesis

I felt like all the paintings were almost drawn the same. The all had the same style of characters, so I wasn’t to sure if it was more of one person’s drawings than the others. In the painting above, I felt like that one showed a girl trapped and that she couldn’t express herself. I am not to sure if that is what the artist was trying to show that message or not, but that is what I believed it was trying to say. I fell like that painting is everyone in class when they don’t know what is going on, but they want to ask questions but feel like they are going to be judged for asking something that everyone else already knows the answers to. Nothing from my life or academic experience relates to that painting because I typically say what is own my mind, except when I know not to. This exhibition was not my favorite, but hopefully the next ones that we do, will be good compared to this one.
